I Don’t Know About You… But the To-Do List Life is Exhausting
There always seems to be a million things to do in a day. I’ve got lists on lists, and even when I do check things off, I still feel like I’m behind. I catch myself rushing around trying to get it all done — only to realize I haven’t taken a single moment to breathe.
And when I finally stop? I usually just end up zoning out with TV or scrolling on my phone. But truthfully? That never actually leaves me feeling better. I still feel depleted, unsatisfied, and honestly, even more tired.
Can you relate?
So this month, I’m making space for more silliness, creativity, and fun — just because it feels good.
Here’s how I like to think of it:
Play = doing something simply for enjoyment. No outcome needed.
Why Should Adults Play?
Because we need it. I honestly believe our souls are wired for play!
-Play makes room for creativity.
When I give myself permission to just draw or paint without a plan, that’s when ideas really start flowing.
-Play gives your brain a break.
It helps calm that part of us that’s always planning or doing. It’s like a reset button.
-Play brings joy and surprise.
You don’t always know how it’s going to go — and that’s part of the fun! It opens up space for spontaneity and a bit of magic.
-Play connects us.
Whether it’s a game night, a hike, or just goofing around in the kitchen, doing something playful with someone else brings you closer.
So… What Counts as Play?
Let me say this loud and clear: If it brings you joy, it counts.
Here are some of my favourite playful things:
-Playing Scrabble or card games (Crib is a personal fave — and I’m hoping to learn Backgammon this summer!)
-Pickleball (obsessed) or tennis
-Colouring or doodling (obviously :) If you are loving these colouring sheets, grab yours here!)
-Baking something just because
-Crafting, DIYing, or rearranging a space (go to a thrift store and find some cool decor pieces to add personality to your space!)
-Making up goofy games with my kids
-Puzzles
-Dancing in the kitchen — loud music encouraged
Basically, if it makes you smile or laugh or lose track of time… it’s play.
How Do You Make Time for It?
Because yeah, life is full. But I’ve learned that if I don’t make time for play, it just doesn’t happen.
Here are a few ways I’ve been working on it:
-Put it on the calendar.
I know… it sounds silly, but scheduling in fun reminds me that it matters.
-Keep your supplies out and ready.
Whether it’s colouring tools, puzzles, or a deck of cards — make it easy to jump in.
-Try something new every week.
This is my favourite one. A few ideas: go to your local pool, try making clay earrings, do a paint-by-number, mix up a fun mocktail, pick up a badminton racket. Just for the experience.
-Invite a friend!
Play is always better shared — and it’s a great excuse to hang out.
Let’s Make This the Month of Play
So here’s my challenge — to myself and to you:
Let’s play more this month. Start small, be silly, try something new… and see what happens.
Need a little inspiration? The June colouring sheets are full of playful themes and creative prompts. Grab yours HERE and let’s have some fun together.
And I’d love to know — what’s your favourite way to play?
